NYC EDC Coney Island Hospital Campus Renovation:
McKissack, as part of a Joint Venture, is providing construction management and MWBE & Workforce compliance and monitoring services to NYCEDC and H+H for the $800 million Coney Island Hospital (CIH) Campus Renovation Project, which is a result of the damages incurred from Hurricane Sandy. The project is funded by FEMA and is subject to all FEMA regulatory requirements. The project is designed to obtain LEED Silver certification. This project has a Project Labor Agreement in place. CIH suffered extensive flood damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy and was forced to suspend services for several months. Since then, CIH has temporarily restored damaged areas and, working with FEMA, has developed plans to mitigate damage from future storms and flooding. The Major Work project at CIH includes the following components:
- A new, 10-story, plus a mechanical mezzanine and penthouse, 366,245 GSF resilient acute care hospital tower to be known as the Critical Services Structure (“CSS”). This building will include a new Emergency Department, Surgical Floor, Radiology/Pharmacy/SPD floor, Mechanical floor, 3 Medical/Surgery floors, three Behavioral health floors and a Mechanical Penthouse. The new tower will incorporate services from the hospital’s main building, which had to be evacuated and closed for several months after Superstorm Sandy flood waters reached knee-high levels in the ground level emergency room.
- On-site parking on the ground floor for employees, patients, and visitors.
- Demolish two of the existing buildings, including Hammett Pavilion and Building 6.
- 243,000 SF of site improvements.
- Renovate and selectively demolish 60,000 GSF, including portions of the existing Main Building and Tower Building.
- Build a new permanent flood mitigation structure (s) (e.g. flood wall) around the campus.
