Inspiring Future Leaders at Columbia Business School’s Elevate Conference

On March 31st, at Columbia Business School’s prestigious Elevate Conference, Cheryl McKissack Daniel delivered an unforgettable keynote address that left a lasting impact on the next generation of business leaders.

Hosted by the Black Business Student Association (BBSA), Elevate is a forum designed to celebrate Black excellence, honor trailblazers who have shaped history, and inspire future changemakers to carve their own paths. This year’s event held even deeper meaning, as it was part of Columbia’s 100/50 Celebration—commemorating 100 years since the first Black student enrolled at CBS, and 50 years since the founding of the BBSA.

As the President & CEO of McKissack & McKissack, the oldest minority- and woman-owned design and construction firm in the country, Cheryl McKissack Daniel brought a wealth of knowledge, authenticity, and encouragement to the stage during her fireside chat in the Geffen Boardroom.

Cheryl spoke candidly about her journey — a legacy rooted in five generations of Black excellence — and the resilience it took to continue pushing boundaries in an industry that has often been closed to women and people of color. She shared insights on leadership, perseverance, and the importance of staying rooted in one’s values while reaching for new heights.

“You have the power to define your own legacy,” Cheryl emphasized, reminding the audience that success isn’t just about reaching the top, but about paving the way for others to follow.

Her message resonated deeply with students, alumni, and executives alike, as she challenged everyone in the room to embrace the spirit of innovation, bravery, and community building.

Throughout the Elevate Conference, the energy was electric — fueled by the stories of Black trailblazers like Cheryl who have made history through courage, vision, and a relentless commitment to excellence. Cheryl’s keynote was not just a highlight of the day; it was a rallying call for every future leader in the room to dream bigger, lead boldly, and elevate others along the way.

We celebrate Cheryl McKissack Daniel for continuing to embody the very spirit of the Elevate Conference — and for reminding us all that our greatest legacy lies not just in what we achieve, but in how we inspire others to rise.
